S Afr J Sci. 2012;108(3/4), Art. #662, 10 pages. http:// dx.doi.org/10.4102/sajs. v108i3/4.662 The launch of artificial satellites (as early as in 1957), specifically the launch of the first laser tracked satellite, Beacon-B, in 1964, has provided data sets which have allowed researchers to probe the long to medium components of the gravitational field of the Earth. In particular, observational data recorded at satellite laser ranging tracking stations have since been used to develop models that quantify the global long-wavelength and medium-wavelength gravity field of the Earth. Currently, literature reviewing gravity field models with geophysical applications is scarce and not up to date. The most recent review paper was published more than a decade ago. In the interim, there has been an unprecedented increase in gravity field modelling, which can be attributed to the deployment of new and dedicated satellite missions. As a result, a number of existing geopotential models have been improved and new models have been developed. Each of these models differs in accuracy and spatial-temporal scale. This review extends the earlier review of gravity field models, by incorporating up-to-date research efforts in geopotential modelling with geophysical applications in oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and solid Earth science.

Secular Variations of the Zonal Gravity Field, Global Sea Level and Polar Motion as Geophysical Constraints

Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) data have been analyzed by ourselves and other groups to provide e~imstes of the secular variations in the zonal harmonics of the geopotential field. While the SLR data available frum late-1992 onward me superior in satellite and temporal coverage (two station shifts in operation by the NASA Network), SLR alma extending back to the mid-1970s have been utilized by s...

The impact of the static part of the Earth’s gravity field on some tests of General Relativity with Satellite Laser Ranging

In this paper we calculate explicitly the secular classical precessions of the node Ω and the perigee ω of an Earth artificial satellite induced by the static, even zonal harmonics of the geopotential up to degree l = 20. Subsequently, their systematic errors induced by the mismodelling in the even zonal geopotential coefficients Jl are compared to the general relativistic secular gravitomagnet...

Gravity acceleration at the sea surface derived from satellite altimetry data using harmonic splines

Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...

Geopotential Error Analysis from Satellite Gradiometer and Global Positioning System Observables on Parallel Architecture

The recovery of a high resolution geopotential from satellite gradiometer observations motivates the examination of high performance computational techniques. The primary subject matter addresses specifically the use of satellite gradiometer and GPS observations to form and invert the normal matrix associated with a large degree and order geopotential solution. Memory resident and out-of-core p...
